SOM Webinar on drug and alcohol issues

On 14 Mar 2017 between 09:00-10:00 [GMT] I am delivering a webinar on drug and alcohol issues. This is free to Society of Occupational Medicine [SOM] members. 
Topics I am hoping to cover:
-general overview of the impact of drugs and alcohol on the work place and how to manage;
-the role of Drug and Alcohol testing;
-the role of the Medical Review Officer.

Alcohol Awareness Week

Running from 14 Nov to 20 Nov 2016, the theme of Alcohol Awareness Week 2016 will look focus on alcohol and health, and knowing the risks associated with alcohol.
In January 2016, the guidance around recommended limits of alcohol was updated by the CMO. The new guidance states that the limits for both men and women are the same – 2-3 units a day, with alcohol-free days during the week. The guidance also highlighted how there is no safe level of alcohol.

UKAS Forensic Workshop

The second gathering of 2016 for the Technical Assessors involved in Forensics will take place on 28 Jul 2016 at Staines-upon-Thames, the UKAS offices. The focus for the toxicology section will be:
* Manual transcriptions,
* Competencies of staff and evidence of relevant techniques,
* Testing of "legal highs" that are now illegal.

WADA ISL Assessor Training 18-19 May 2016

As a WADA ISL Assessor I will be attending the next training session scheduled for 18-19 May 2016 and this will take place in Madrid, Spain. WADA is very grateful to the Spanish National Accreditation Body, ENAC (Entidad Nacional de Acreditación) who kindly agreed to host this training session at its offices. 
The main objectives of the session include an update on WADA activities, adopted changes to the ISL and its relevant Technical Documents (TDs), as well as an open discussion on the subjects of common interests related to the accreditation of WADA anti-doping laboratories.

Stavanger Conference 24-25 Aug 2016

Stavanger, Norway is the location for the next IFDAT Conference scheduled to run 24-25 Aug 2016. Not only will I be attending, I will also be speaking about the various accreditation standards involved in workplace drug and alcohol testing; ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 15189, and the different accreditation bodies and their approach to this field.

BMA Guidance on the role of the Occupational Health Physician

The BMA has updated their guidance on occupational health including an explanation of the expected duties of occupational physicians and practical advice on specific aspects of the role, such as conducting health assessments and providing advice on sickness absence.

An independent review into the impact on employment outcomes of drug or alcohol addiction, and obesity

Dame Carol Black is leading a review on the impact on employment outcomes of drug or alcohol addiction and obesity. The Society and the Faculty are working together to coordinate a response to the call for evidence. World Day for Safety & Health at Work, 28 Apr 2015

Society of Hair Testing 2015

The annual meeting of the Society of Hair Testing (SoHT) is taking place in Sau Paulo (Brazil) between 03-06 May 2015.  With 10 sessions covering drug driving, alcohol markers and analytical issues to name a few (chromatox.com.br/ct/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Scientific-program-v1.pdf).  
I will be delivering the final lecture on Tuesday 05 May 2015 looking at Quality and Accreditation followed by oral presentations and a roundtable discussion.
